FAQ

Questions, answered plainly.

If yours isn’t here, ask it. We’ll answer you and add it to the list.

Applying

What does the program cost?

Nothing. Tuition, certification fees, and materials are covered by donors and our Business Ventures.

How long is it, and how many hours a week?

Sixteen weeks, full-time on weekdays, plus Family Gathering Monday evenings from 6 to 8. Treat it as your job for that stretch.

Can I work while I’m in the program?

Many Leaders earn through our Business Ventures or partner placements. An outside full-time job usually isn’t compatible, so talk it through with a Coach before you apply.

What if I don’t have a GED or diploma?

You’ll need one to start, but apply anyway. We’ll point you toward a local GED program and hold your place in mind for the next cohort.

When does the next cohort start?

Applications are open year-round and cohorts start on a rolling basis. Submit the form and we’ll tell you the next start date and information session.

Eligibility

I have a criminal record. Does that disqualify me?

No. Many Leaders come to us out of incarceration. The hard stops are an open case that would conflict with the program and sex-offender registry requirements.

What does “stable housing” mean?

Enough stability to know you’ll have a roof each night. Owning, renting, living with friends or family, couch surfing, or a hotel all count. A shelter, your car, or unsheltered doesn’t count, and we’ll connect you with housing partners first.

Do I have to be sober? What about marijuana?

Six months clean from hard drugs before you start, and drug-free, including THC, for the whole program, with testing. Employers in our tracks require it.

Do I have to live in Des Moines?

Within about an hour of 1912 6th Ave. You’ll be on site most days, so the commute has to be sustainable.

The program

Why do you call participants “Leaders”?

Because that’s what the program asks of them, and because the language you use about people becomes the language they use about themselves. Staff are Coaches; volunteers are Allies.

Do I have to be a Christian?

No. Change Course is faith-rooted and we’re open about it. You don’t have to share our faith to be a Leader here, and it will never affect how you’re treated or what you’re offered.

What happens after I graduate?

You join the Alumni Association: continued financial coaching, professional development, and a standing invitation to mentor the cohort behind you.

Is a job guaranteed?

No one can promise that honestly. What we promise is a credential employers ask for, warm introductions to partners who know the program, and a Coach working the search with you until it lands.

Giving & getting involved

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes. Change Course is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and gifts are deductible to the full extent of the law.

What’s the smallest useful way to help?

An hour of mock interviews, a Monday dinner, or a monthly gift of any size. If you run a business, hiring one graduate outweighs almost anything else. Partner with us →

Do you take in-kind donations?

Sometimes. Work boots, bus passes, laptops, and interview clothing are almost always useful. Call before you drop anything off so it doesn’t sit in a closet.
